Nintendo has now announced a new version of the Switch - OLED Model, a day after rumours of a special edition emerged online. As we discussed at the time, Nintendo markets the new version as the Mario Red Edition, in part to help market the forthcoming Super Mario Bros. Wonder game. While Nintendo will not release the latter until October 20, the Switch - OLED Model Mario Red Edition will be available a few weeks prior.
As the images below show, Nintendo has extended Mario's signature red hue to most parts of the Switch - OLED model, except for its display bezels and front trim piece. Additionally, Nintendo will not bundle a themed Switch Joy-Con Grip. Still, Nintendo has adjusted the Joy-Con straps and has hidden a silhouette of Mario on the console's bundled dock. Also, the same accessory contains nearly two dozen coins, as if the dock itself was a 2D side-scrolling Super Mario level.
Nintendo will begin selling the special edition model on October 6. Please note that the Switch - OLED Model Mario Red Edition is unlikely to ship with a copy of Super Mario Bros. Wonder. Instead, Nintendo tends to sell these special edition consoles at the same price as their regular counterparts. Thus, you must buy the game separately to complete the Mario experience.
